A New era for VR gaming and entertainment: OC5 day 1 recap

September 27, 2018

More than 3,000 people gathered in San Jose, California, for our fifth annual Oculus Connect, where we announced breakthrough hardware, software, and content innovations that will define the next era of VR.

On Day 1 of OC5, we revealed Oculus Quest (our first all-in-one VR system designed for gaming), a brand new Star Wars VR experience from ILMxLAB, and exciting updates for Rift and Oculus Go.

Here’s a recap of today’s announcements:

Unveiling Oculus Quest
Oculus Quest is our first all-in-one, 6DOF headset with positionally tracked controllers. It launches in Spring 2019, starting at $399 USD. Made for immersive VR gaming, it leverages Oculus Insight, our new inside-out tracking system that lets you go beyond just roomscale.

ILMxLAB announces Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series
Today we announced Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series — a yet untold Star Wars story from ILMxLAB that will debut exclusively on Oculus Quest in 2019. Vader Immortal will let you step inside the Star Wars universe and wield a lightsaber like a true Jedi.

Powerful updates for Oculus Rift
Rift Core 2.0, our new, more personalized and powerful system software, is exiting beta and rolling out to everyone starting today. This latest update includes new dev tools and social features to more easily connect people with games and each other in VR. The Oculus mobile app now also supports Rift, helping you discover events, connect with friends, browse the Oculus Store, and even remote-install new games directly to your PC.

Rift is also getting some great new games, including Lone Echo II and Echo Combat from Ready At DawnDefector from Twisted Pixel Games, and Final Assault from Phaser Lock Interactive. And we celebrated today’s release of Vox Machinae — a fan favorite dating back to the dev kit days.

We also announced new Rift platform features to help developers find additional ways to connect with fans and build community. Our Hybrid App SDK helps bring existing desktop software into VR with full UI and functionality — without the need for native apps or ongoing maintenance.

Oculus Go brings VR to everyone — now with YouTube, NBA games, and more
Since launching at this year’s F8 conference in May, Oculus Go is the best way to get into VR and enjoy movies, TV shows, live events, and more in your own personal theater. With 80 percent of Oculus Go owners new to our ecosystem, it’s bringing more people into VR than ever before.

We’ve hosted 80-plus live events so far in Oculus Venues, and the new fall lineup includes NBA games, movies, concerts, and more. We also announced that YouTube VR is coming to Oculus Go soon, with more than 800,000 VR videos.

Oculus Go will also support casting to your phone and TV, so your friends will be able to follow along as you take on a zombie horde in Z-Strike or catch a rare fish in Bait!

RED + Facebook 360 introduce the Manifold camera
At OC5, we also showed the Manifold camera by RED with Facebook 360, a professional-grade, set-ready 3D/360-degree camera created in partnership with RED.

With Oculus Quest, new features and content for both Rift and Oculus Go, and the advanced Manifold camera, we’re excited to continue working closely with the developer and creator communities to build a self-sustaining ecosystem that will make VR a part of everyday life.

Stay tuned for more OC5 action tomorrow, and tune in for tonight’s VR League Onward Finals at 6:00 pm PT on fb.gg/vrleague or in Oculus Venues for Oculus Go and Gear VR.
